British Problems - Chinese Solutions
|
[Workshop One] Many of the problems around integration and social cohesion in Britain are not shared by the Chinese community. Why is this so? What lessons can be learned from the Chinese perspective on social cohesion?
Delegates Comments: The biggest factor behind the Chinese community's lack of commitment to social cohesion in Britain was mainly geographical: communities are so dispersed throughout the UK that there is 'no collective voice'. This in turn made the problem political: with no unified voice, the Chinese communities are under-represented in the media and government.
The breakdown of the family unit in the UK was a problem that the Chinese model, while not exactly providing a solution, could offer some lessons. Strong traditional values of filial respect and Confucius principles meant significantly fewer broken families and social unrest among Chinese communities.
