British Chinese
[Workshop Four] How can Britain's Chinese community contribute to the improvement of Britain's society, and make a real difference not only within the community but beyond?

Delegates Comments: One participant answered, 'Why bother?' He was quick to add that this was not his personal sentiment but rather the attitude of many Chinese in Britain. Before any difference can be made, the community must tackle apathy and want to contribute to British society.

The first step, suggested at the conference, is to change the collective mindset; replace the pursuit of personal success with one that embraces community spirit and civic responsibility.

One practical way is to take part in voluntary work that gives something back to society. Another is for the government, media groups and major organizations to lessen institutionalized obstacles and recruit more Chinese people.
