The early history of Chinese in Britain is explored for the first time in a ten part series on BBC Radio 4.
The series, presented by writer and performer Anna Chen,
is a collection of stories beginning with the first Chinese arrivals in the 17th century
and going up to the Takeaway Generation in 1950s and 60s.
Anna, curious about the unseen stories of the earlier Chinese generations, said:
"In order to understand who we are, we need to understand where we came from.
For the Chinese it is a bit more problematic because we have been very much an invisible grouping."
The new series follows on from the successful Beyond the Takeaway, a 2003 series about second and third generation British born Chinese, both produced by Mukti Jain Campion.
Chinese in Britain is on BBC Radio 4 on weekdays from 30th April through to 11th May at 3.45 - 4.00pm.
